In my Human Centered Design & Engineering courses, my team and I, Bond Beyond Borders, created a prototype of an electronic bracelet for individuals in long distance friendships and relationships. The goal was to improve virtual communication in order to create more meaningful interactions. Over the duration of this course, we went through every step of the user-centered design process, including research, interviews, usability testing, wireframes, and prototypes. We also got to pitch our final prototype to industry experts!
Our problem statement is: “How might we support young adults in long-distance relationships and friendships to improve their emotional connection through virtual communication?”. Life is full of possibilities, but sometimes, doors open in opposite directions for loved ones, and they are faced with the challenge of long distance. Our goal is to provide those with hundreds, maybe even thousands, of miles between one another a meaningful way to connect no matter where they are.
We researched existing products that serve a similar purpose as our intended prototype, which included:
- Facetime
- Apple Vision Pros
- Meta Portal
- AR Glasses
This provided us with insight on user experiences through reviews of successful and non-successful features and functions people wished these products had.
1. Connectivity
2. Portability
3. Notifications
4. Customization
5. Easy & quick set up
6. Save Media
We crafted personas derived from our intended audience to "put ourselves in their shoes". Personas allowed our team to humanize our data and ensure that every aspect of our product aligned with real-world needs and expectations.
We took our persona, Isabella Parker, and made a user journey map for her, noting key moments and pain points throughout her day. At these time stamps, we predicted her emotions in terms of happiness, anxiety, and frustration. As you can see, throughout the day her happiness fluctuates as her anxiety and frustration steadily increases. These negative emotions come from the disconnect she feels with her partner. They have a pattern of missing each other due to work, miscommunicating their feelings, and ending their days with arguments.
